If you have ever wondered what the drink version of Cronuts, rainbow bagels, or gold encrusted purple doughnuts… we have found the answer: an over the top, must see to believe milkshake from New York City’s Black Tap.

These “crazy shakes” are piled high with obnoxious toppings like birthday cake, lollipops, and edible pearls. These are the milkshakes the bring more than just the boys to the yard – boys, girls, grandmas, and food bloggers wait in line for hours to get into their restaurant.

They have been featured on countless news stations, the Food Network snapchat, and pretty much every New York City tourist’s instagram.

And they taste even better than they look. I know, I didn’t think it was possible either.

Since it isn’t possible for the entire world to get their hands on one of these shakes, I decided to create one at home, for the both of us. Because a milkshake movie night in my PJ’s sounds like a better plan than than a 3-hour long line. Ya know? And trust me, the beauty in these milkshakes is in the imperfection… so grab a glass of wine and let your kids go wild.

These are like the Disney World of milkshakes.

The secret to these milkshakes is simple – go with flavors you love. For the Sweet ‘n’ Salty version we use a peanut butter base. Then, look for items that enhance or emphasize the goodness you already have going on in the ice cream, such as fancy chocolates and candy bars, donuts, cupcakes and other pastries … a few meringues or jumbo marshmallow.

In the “Sweet N’ Salty” shake, we have a chocolate frosted rim with M&M’s & PB cups, topped with pretzel rods, chocolate covered pretzels, whipped cream & chocolate drizzle. Sweet & salty perfection, if I do say so myself.

Tips for creating the most epic milkshake in your very own kitchen…

First off, look for a tall, heavy bottom cup – you want something with a footed base because you are going to be stacking it high and need something that can stand up to how much garnish you are about to put on top.

But because we both know kids and glass are a big no-no, so here are these plastic cups would work great. But if you are looking for the real deal, get these milkshake cups.

Second, what most people don’t realize is that the rimmed toppings are held together with frosting. It’s like the glue. And frosting works.. In my opinion, store bought frosting works best because it’s easy and super thick. The super thick part is what is important because we have lots of stuff to hold up here.

These were honestly so much fun to make and even more fun to eat… and I don’t have plans to stop the crazy train here. So, what other milkshakes from Black Tap should we try to recreate? Let us know in the comments below! 🙂

Homemade Black Tap "Sweet N' Salty" Milkshake (Step-By-Step Tutorial)

Homemade version of Black Tap’s “Sweet N’ Salty” Milkshake – peanut butter shake, chocolate frosted rim with chocolate gems & PB cups, topped with pretzel rods, chocolate covered pretzels, whipped cream & chocolate drizzle.

Ingredients:

For the jumbo M&M’s chocolate covered pretzels (this is optional, you can also use undipped pretzels)

  • jumbo sourdough pretzels
  • baking chocolate
  • mini M&M’s

  • 4 cups quality vanilla ice cream
  • 1/4 cup peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup salted caramel (optional but HIGHLY recommended)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 8 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 cups milk, less for thicker milkshakes

For the toppings:

  • chocolate frosting (I use store bought – the thicker the better!)
  • peanut butter (you want it to be thick! Not the natural kind)
  • M&M’s
  • mini PB cups
  • whipped cream
  • pretzel rods
  • chocolate syrup
  • salted caramel, warmed if not in a pourable bottle
  • tall straws

For the jumbo M&M chocolate covered pretzels:

  • Melt the chocolate according to package instructions. Dip the pretzels in the melted chocolate and roll in mini M&M’s. Set aside to let dry.

For the milkshake:

  • Using a blender and blend all ingredients together until smooth.

For the toppings:

  • Schmear chocolate frosting on the rim the milkshake glass. Schmear peanut butter on top of the chocolate frosting. Roll the rim of the glass in M&M’s. Put a little spoonful of peanut butter on the back of a mini PB cup and stick 5 of them around the top of the glass. Drizzle chocolate fudge in the glass and fill the glass with the blended milkshake. Top with whipped cream. Then stick in a couple of pretzel rods, a M&M chocolate covered pretzel, and drizzle with chocolate syrup and salted caramel. Repeat with the other 3 glasses!
  • Stick a straw in it and enjoy!

step-by-step

First, we make the chocolate covered pretzels with mini M&M’s and melting chocolate. You could just use plain pretzels instead to cut down on time, but plain isn’t fun and I’m guessing if you are making these milkshakes you are fun. So…. you should probably not skip this step. 🙂

Then we schmear all the chocolate frosting on the rim of the milkshake glass. If you are look for a super cute milkshake glass that is the exact one Black Tap uses get these, but if you have kids and glass is a no-go get these.

Now we add another schmear, but this time it is peanut butter.

Next is the M&M’s… roll the rim of the class all around in the M&M’s  so that all the frosting/peanut butter is covered. If the M&M’s aren’t sticking then that means you do not have enough frosting.

Next, put a little spoonful of peanut butter on the back of a mini PB cup and stick 5 of them around the top of the glass.
