Hot dogs are basically like salads – anything goes.

You’ve got your meat options: beef franks, bun-length franks, low fat franks. The traditional toppings: ketchup, mustard, relish, onions. Or the famous chili cheese dog drowning in cheese and homemade chili…  but this cheddar garlic soft pretzel wrapped hot dog that doubles as the bun + hot dog all in one is the real winner!

For my hot dogs I love Hebrew National… It’s all about what makes the cut (and what doesn’t) with them. The hot dogs start off by getting wrapped in our favorite soft pretzel dough + dried onion, garlic powder, and cheddar cheese chunks. Then the hot dogs get baked in the oven for about 15 minutes until the dough is sot and fluffy, the hot dogs are cooked, and melty cheese is oozing from every crevice. Right after the hot dogs come out of the oven they get patted with a little bit of butter for a little extra deliciousness. 😉

These have so much flavor on their own that the only other toppings you need (if any) are ketchup and mustard.

Translation – these are the da bomb.

Cheddar Garlic Wrapped Soft Pretzel Hot Dogs

Super easy buttery soft garlic pretzel-wrapped hot dogs oozing with cheddar cheese! SO much more fun and better tasting than traditional buns!  

Ingredients:

  • 10-12 Hebrew National hot dogs

For the pretzel dough:

  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1 Tablespoon instant yeast
  • 3 1/2 cups bread flour
  • 2 Tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups cheddar cheese, cubed
  • 2 Tablespoons dried parsley flakes, more for topping
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons dried minced onion
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

For the egg wash:

  • 1 large egg
  • 2 Tablespoons water
  • !For the topping:
  • sea salt, for topping
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted

Directions:

To make the dough:

Combine water, yeast, and sugar in bowl of a stand mixer that is fitted with a dough hook, until fairly mixed, about one minute. Some clusters of yeast will remain. Let yeast/water rest for 5 minutes.

In medium bowl combine flour and salt. Add flour and salt mixture to the water and yeast and knead for 2 minutes. If dough is super sticky add small amounts of flour until dough stops sticking to sides. I had to add about 1/4 cup more. Do not add more than 1/2 cup. Add the cheese, parsley, and onions and mix until just combined. The parsley and onions are what give the “garlic” flavor, so don’t be confused that there isn’t any actual garlic in this recipe.

Let rest for 15 minutes.

To make the hot dogs

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface. Knead the dough for 1-2 minutes and shape into a ball. With a sharp knife, cut ball of dough in half and then into thirds to make 10-12 smaller balls of dough. Each ball should be a little over 1/4 cup. This measurement does not have to be exact. Use as much or little dough for each pretzel as you wish – the size of the bun is completely up to you.

Roll each piece into a long log (about 8 inches long). Wrap a rolled piece of dough around one hot dog half and pinch the ends together to keep it from unraveling. Repeat with remaining dough and hot dogs.

In a small bowl, beat the egg and water together and pour into a shallow bowl or pie dish. Dunk the hot dogs into the egg wash (both sides). Place on prepared baking sheet. Sprinkle the tops of the pretzels with salt and parsley.

Bake for 20 minutes or until dough is fully cooked through and cheese is melted.

Remove from oven and pat with melted butter. Let cool for 5 minutes and serve immediately with desired condiments.
